Crema Mexicana

Crema Mexicana - Comfort Food Meals

Summer is my favorite time of year, not just because of the sunshine and warm breezes, but because of the culinary adventures that come with it.
I can picture it now: fresh tacos sizzling on the grill, the smell of spices in the air, and colorful ingredients laid out on the table. And you know what ties all of this together?

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons of fresh buttermilk: This adds the tangy flavor that sets crema mexicana apart.
  • 2 cups of whipping cream: This is the base that gives it that luscious texture.
  • 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract: While this is not a traditional ingredient, it adds a subtle sweetness—just a hint!
  • 2 tablespoons of cultured sour cream: For that classic sour cream flavor.

Method

  1. Making crema mexicana is a fun and simple process! Just gather your ingredients and follow along with me. Spoiler alert: It only takes a few minutes!
Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients
  1. Start by gathering all your ingredients on the counter. Having everything at hand makes the process smoother. Trust me; it saves you from turning into a kitchen scavenger while mixing stuff.
Step 2: Combine Creams
  1. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, pour in the 2 cups of whipping cream and add in 2 tablespoons of cultured sour cream.
  2. Whisk them together gently. You're aiming for a smooth consistency, but don’t worry about perfection just yet.
Step 3: Add Buttermilk
  1. Next, add the 3 tablespoons of fresh buttermilk. This is where that tangy flavor begins to shine. Whisk every ingredient together until it’s thoroughly combined, creating a delightful creaminess.
Step 4: Flavor It Up
  1. Now, add the 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract. I know, it might sound unusual, but trust me, it brings out the richness without being overwhelming. Mix it well with the other ingredients.
Step 5: Let It Rest
  1. Cover the mixing bowl with plastic wrap or a lid. Let it sit at room temperature for about 24 hours. This resting period allows the flavors to mingle and develop. Think of it as giving your crema some spa time. It’s worth the wait!
Step 6: Refrigerate
  1. After your 24 hours are up, transfer the crema mexicana to a clean jar and refrigerate. It’s even better chilled, and you can store it for up to two weeks.

Notes

Here are some handy tips for perfecting your crema mexicana:
  • Quality Ingredients: Always choose high-quality whipping cream and fresh buttermilk for the best flavor.
  • Avoid Over-Whisking: You want it smooth, but don't overdo it or your cream will become too thick.
  • Experimenting with Cultures: Different brands of cultured sour cream can slightly alter the flavor. Try a few to find your favorite.
  • Enhance with Lime Juice: A dash of fresh lime juice can really brighten up the flavor!
  • Use Whole Ingredients: If possible, stick to whole ingredients instead of low-fat versions. The richness is what we want!
